England Final Squad

Fifa Ranking: 8 (1,068 Points)
First appearance: 1950
No. of appearances (inc 2010): 13
Best result: Winners (1966)
Coach: Fabio CAPELLO (ITA)

The final 23 man squad for England to depart for South Africa is announced. Capello has opted for experience at the top level, with no real shocks.

Surprise inclusion as a 17 year old of Theo Walcott at the 2006 World Cup, is the surprise omission by Fabio Capello in 2010. The pace down the wings in the England attack will now come from Shaun Wright Phillips and Aaron Lennon.

In the striker position there is no room for Darren Bent consistently one of the Premierships top scorers. Emile Heskey is included due to his support for Rooney up front. In midfield Chelsea winger Joe Cole is recalled as a player who can create something from nothing in the final third of the pitch.

The recalled center back Ledley King also retains his place with Tottenham team mate Huddlestone missing out. Another inclusion, Matthew Upson at West Ham United might feel lucky at making the final team.

The question about whether Lampard and Gerrard can play together in the same midfield was questioned by Coach Fabio Capello in the 2-1 friendly victory against Japan. It looks like a holding midfielder in Gareth Barry or Michael Carrick will provide cover if Capello decides to play both in the center.

Gerrard looked out of sorts on the left side of midfield and many contend he is best utilized just off the striker Wayne Rooney, in a similar capacity to how he plays behind Fernando Torres in the Liverpool attack.England face USA, Slovenia and Algeria in the group stages at the World Cup.
